PETER GOLDING’S CAFÉ DJANGO ‘Gypsy Jazz & Hot Harmonica Swing’ is inspired by the unique spirit of gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt’s Hot Club de France’s famous music of the 30s/40s, as well as blues, big band and 50s swing.

In addition to his love of blues, Peter’s early harmonica inspiration was Larry Adler, the harmonica virtuoso who recorded four tracks with Django and further influenced his passion for gypsy jazz. Peter was subsequently proud to be invited to play at the celebration of Larry Adler’s life at the Arts Theatre, Soho in 2001 and put together a group with the great guitarist Diz Disley as Le Hot Club de Londres.

Café Django followed later, playing many venues including L’Escargot, Chelsea Arts Club, The Arts Club in Dover Street, Le Quecumbar, Momo’s, Brassiere Toulouse-Lautrec and the National Harmonica League Festival. The band features leading musicians of the style and is one of the world’s few (maybe only) harmonica-led gypsy jazz swing bands, with its motto ‘It’s Party Time!’

RED HOT & LIVE is the result of an atmospheric gig at our favourite venue, Chelsea Arts Club (mentioned here with kind permission). The band was ‘lined out’ through the desk and so the sound engineer downloaded a recording. As it was not in multi-track, editing was limited. 
I then spent several sessions with a cool soundman, Roy Fullbrook at his Camden studio in front of a huge screen adapting the lengthy audio into separate tracks for the final playlist. Most important was to retain the fun ‘party time’ atmosphere and wild musical spirit of the evening!

Nothing can match the amazing and special qualities of the band’s musicians, both individually and collectively. Everyone excelled, but please allow special mention of lead guitarist David Ahmed (The Duke Of Django) and violinist Frank Biddulph (The Viscount of Violin) as well as our songstress Christine Lockhart.
